Enkindle Parliament
At Enkindle Village School, we promote collaboration, responsibility, and critical thinking. As a commitment to our democratic process and philosophy, students are encouraged to attend Parliament where they can propose and vote on school decisions and actions. A process where students must present ideas and make pitches of ideas and interests allows students to add to the depth of opportunities to be involved in the school community.
Parliamentary decisions have included in the past:
- New clubs and lunchtime activities based around student and staff interests (e.g. Mountain Bike Club, Book Club, Chess Club, Philosophy Club)
- Fundraising ventures
- Buzz Café (our very own school café with a professional coffee machine)
- Whole school events such as student-led Talent Shows
- Excursions and incursions
- Improvements to the school facilities
- Themes and ways to celebrate graduation and other student successes
- Developing expectations and processes within the school
- Sustainability practices and events
As a Democratic School, we value student voice and decision making. We promote active participation in self-learning and working towards meaningful and positive communal goals and outcomes. Parliament prepares students for change and challenges as the voting process does not always yield the outcomes they want. Students become more resilient and respectful of the process when they are active participants rather than passive passengers.
At Enkindle Village School, students have the right to be heard and seen whilst also respecting those same rights for others.
